Putting the Environment into Play:
Comparing the Efficacy and Comprehensiveness of Professional Sports Leagues' Sustainability Initiatives

For many, sports run the world. Sundays are dominated by twelve-hour binges of NFL games, summers smell like ballpark hot dogs and peanuts, and you can spot someone wearing a LeBron jersey just about everywhere.

Seventy percent (70%) of Americans follow sports, while just seventeen percent (17%) follow science. This research strives to understand how to connect a love for sports and a respect for environment, using a devout fanbase to incite an environmental agenda.

The NFL, MLB, and NBA were evaluated for the efficacy of their respective sustainability initiatives, both at the league and team levels. The three were ranked on their executive inclusion on sustainability issues, methods of disclosure for initiatives, and operational projects addressing natural resource consumption.

This research establishes the case that organized sports affect the environment on a massive scale. The economic, social, and racial implications that sustainable sports can have on the world are immense.

We are starting to understand how important it is to use existing public support (sports) to promote positive societal opportunities (mitigating climate change).

This work exposes vulnerabilities in the actual implementation of sustainability projects, both in the ease of greenwashing schemes and disregard for follow-up monitoring.

Sports have begun incorporating social injustices to their agendas, resulting in consequential and incredible awareness.

It's time for the environment to come into play.
